Nintendo have released a new firmware update for the Wii U that allows Wii games to be played on the Wii U GamePad but all last-generation Wii software that are displayed on the Wii U GamePad cannot be controlled by the GamePad alone. A Wii Remote Plus or Wii Remote is required to play Wii software titles. As disappointing as this may sound, there are many complications to consider for why Gamepad functionality will not work. There are over 1200+ games for the Nintendo Wii and even though it would be a nice feature, it would require all Wii software controls to be reworked from the ground up with the Wii U Gamepad in mind. This would mean that Nintendo would have to talk to each developer to add this functionality.
Update: This system update is approximately 700MB, and depending on your internet connection, may take a significant amount of time to download.
