It seems that Microsoft wants to dabble in a new rendering technique that will allow the Xbox One to achieve photo realistic lighting effects. This advanced technique called, “real-time ray-tracing” that allows an image to trace the path of light through pixels in an image plane and thus creating effects it encounters with virtual objects in real-time. Microsoft Studios executive, Phil Spencer, confirmed that the studio is already underway with testing.
“We’ve done experiments with Realtime Raytracing,” Spencer said on Twitter. “A ton of potential with this tech; amazing visuals.”
To help better understand what real-time ray-tracing is, you can see a demonstration of Nvidia’s Kepler real-time ray-tracing system in action. It’s pretty amazing.
